broadcastvideo.com bars Welcome to the Net Police  cap

Macie Video Service has developed this Web space as a one-stop, world-wide resource for serial numbers of stolen gear. Webmaster Danny Gallagher (Dan-o) sorts through correspondence to keep us on line and up to date.

If you find that equipment you have or know about is stolen, contact local police, explain the situation to them, and work with them to verify that the gear is in fact, still considered stolen. (i.e. the gear wasn't recovered, then sold, and not ever removed from our list.)

Don't be a hero. We didn't create this listing to follow it up with the "Net Tragedy" or "Net Obituaries."  Let the "Real Police" take care of the work that the "Net Police" has started........(music up, freeze frame, and scroll down....)

Also, if there were no market for stolen gear, the incentive to steal would be greatly diminished. So if you see something on Ebay etc, contact the seller and ask for the serial number, then do a google search for stolen equipment sites and check the number. Don't EVER buy professional equipment without the serial number!!

Use your browser's find function to search this page by serial number, or click on one of the categories listed above.
And please [click here to submit] serial numbers and info on stolen gear!

Important - This is a subsite of "broadcastvideo.com", so we are listing only equipment used in the high end, broadcast industry. Please no still cameras, industrial or consumer equipment.

Some details of what happened that might help to prevent it happening to someone else.
The equipment was being rented by a new client who called themselves B and H Films although on some of the paperwork it also appeared as Band H films. The names given for the Rental Application were Rich Robinson and his partner Rachel Robinson. They were in town to do a T-Mobile spot, and they hired 3 locals over craig's list as Production Assistants. Their insurance certificate was checked and valid. They listed one of the local PA's hired as well as another local Rental House as references. Since both were part of this job, they were able to corroborate a relationship with the client.

All new clients are COD. The Production Assistants came in on Wednesday December 24th to pick up the equipment. Since they are local crew, they were known by the employees. One of them had a check from the company which did not draw any red flags and they left with the equipment and met two other people identifying themselves as Nick and Christina in another town who took possession of the equipment. One of the local crew members had previously met Nick and Christina when he was hired for this spot so still no red flags. He described them as both African American in their Late 20's or early 30's, driving a Red Pontiac Vibe with North Carolina plates.

We were contacted by one of the local Production Assistants on Saturday December 27th. This was the scheduled shoot day and only the local crew members appeared on location. Since then we have been in contact with the police, insurance companies, everyone involved and other local contacts trying to put all the details together. The job was scheduled to return on Monday December 29th and, of course, did not.

Any info, please contact dunn@rule.com

Panasonic AJ-HPX2000P, Des Moines, 9/4/08

On September 4, 2008, a person or persons entered our studio during daylight hours and removed an HD camera and a P2 GEAR system, still in their cases, from the studio where a setup was being made. Perhaps the receptionist was at lunch and others were at work or in the restroom. Nothing else was taken, so the intruders appear to have had an idea of what they wanted. We are absolutely dumbfounded. This place seems like a low-crime area in a low-crime city. But maybe no city is, anymore. Watch who you let into your place of business, and control the front door!
We now have video sureveillance/recording, and entry door keypads.

High Def Cameras and Gear, Ontario, 4/19/2007

Charles Street Video was broken into on Thursday night and had the core of its recently acquired mobile packages stolen, including both of its new, high definition video cameras. Attached is a list of the gear that was taken. We have secured the equipment office and started to process an insurance claim. We are optimistic that our claim will be honoured but even should it be, the theft will cost the facility thousands of dollars. This is distressing but perhaps even more so is the idea that the thief(ves) likely knew the organization.

Panasonic Varicam, Newark Int. Airport, 3/5/07

On March 5th, 2007, my Panasonic Varicam was stolen from Newark Liberty International Airport, Terminal C, Arrivals level, Baggage belt # 6 at 6:15 am. So much for post 9/11 airport security. There were absolutely no police on the arrivals level and the security camera's that are in place at the end of each baggage belt are a joke!!! The thief knew exactly what to grab and it took less than 10 seconds for the theft to take place. Please take extra care with gear at Newark Airport because as far as I am concerned, there is absolutely no security at that Airport.

The following equipment was stolen:

3 DigiBetas plus, Hong Kong, 7/7/06

APV is an independent production company based in Hong Kong.  We have just had production equipment worth hundreds of thousands of US dollars stolen in Hong Kong, and understand that the thieves are operating elsewhere in the Asia Pacific region, trying to dupe other companies into leasing them gear -- particularly HD cameras.

The company -- which we do not believe is real -- is called "Lusa Producoes", and claims to be based in Lisbon Portugal.  The two people involved call themselves Roberto Fernandez and Alvares Ferreira.  They use the email address <commercial@lusa-producoes.com>, and their phone number is + 351 21 9196 66882.

A still shot of Alvares Ferreira from our office's CCTV cameras is attached... a photo of the cameraman was taken by our camera assistant on one of the days of the shoot.  A scan of their business card is also attached.

They knew exactly what equipment they needed, and had a quite comprehensive gear list that was thoroughly specced out.  When we met them, they were experienced and knowledgeable about the industry.

We cannot be certain that they gave us their real names... and at this point, are reasonably certain that all of the details they gave us were false.

If these men approach you, or for that matter, if anyone claiming to be from a production company in Portugal contacts you about hiring gear, please let us know as soon as possible, so that we can contact the authorities... and definitely DO NOT do the deal without checking them out thoroughly.

We've also created a short video with the images attached below... it's up on YouTube, at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4bFUlUjK6YY ... we've posted (or people have posted for us) notices on tvcameramen.com, World Update Digest, PERA (the Professional Equipment Rental Association), The Guild of Television Cameraman, www.productionpoint.com, www.bblist.com, www.tvz.tv, and a few others.

HD Cameras, Paris, Late June/06
The Theft
---------

At the end of June, 2006, approximately half a million dollars worth of HD camera gear, decks, and
lenses was stolen by a group of criminals posing as clients. The theft took place in Paris,
France, at the Orly airport. The principal thief, who called himself Amos Laufer of International Film
Consulting, spent over a month working with our company to plan a complex production project, part
of which involved arial HD shooting from a helicopter. On the day that our crew showed up to
conduct a test shoot and mount the gear on a ground base and on the helicopter, Mr. Laufer and his
associate forcibly stole the equipment and disappeared.

The Impact
----------

Being robbed by a client who spent over a month working closely with us to plan a production came
as a tremendous shock. The gear that was stolen represents the livelihood of our company. This
kind of crime destroys companies and lives, and we would like to call upon everyone in the worldwide
production community to 1) be aware and careful to avoid falling for similar trickery; and 2) to
do everything possible to help us find and apprehend these criminals so that they can't victimize
others.

How to Help
-----------

The French police are working hard on this case, and they need leads. The gear that was stolen
represents the cream of the crop of HD production equipment. In particular, the two Sony HDW F900P
cameras, the HDW2000P deck, and the HD stabilized Canon 40x10 lens, are items that can be noticed
and traced by concerned camera operators and video professionals. We would therefore like to request
that all HD operators to keep a careful eye out for this gear, particularly when conducting shoots
in parts of the world where the equipment may be relatively rare and difficult to trace,
including: Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and South America.

Please contact us or the French police ASAP should you have any leads or ideas on this case.
Particularly, if you notice this kind of gear for sale or rent, you can check the serial numbers (list
below). One of the HDW900 cameras has a serial number of 11110, which is particularly easy to
remember. If you see HD cameras bearing serial numbers that have been erased or modified, that would
also be grounds for suspicion.

Everything but the camera...      3/17/06

This theft occurred in the parking lot of the Renaissance Concourse Hotel, 1 Hartsfield Centre Parkway Atlanta, GA (next to the airport) sometime between 11pm Thursday March 16, 2006 and Friday morning March 17, 2006 at approx. 8:45am when I was contacted by Hotel Security. Three other vehicles were also broken into and one attempted vehicle theft, but mine was the only one completely stolen. The alarm was on, but apparently no one heard it, or paid any attention to it.  Right now I don't think that the thieves were specifically targeting video equipment, they may have just gotten lucky, but who knows.   Thank God, at least my camera and new lens was inside with me!

STOLEN:
Black 2005 Ford F-150 Super Crew 4x4 with matching camper shell. Front window w/tinted strip on top, two front windows tinted, rear windows and camper shell windows "blacked out". Billet grill in upper and lower grill openings in front of truck. Stainless steel factory running boards/bars. Stock wheels and tires. Custom aluminum shelf in back.
NC License Plate
VIN: 1FTPW14535FA69102

UPDATE!! - Partial recovery: the truck was recovered on 3/22/06 with some equipment still inside.  Gear recovered: Vinten tripod, A/B battery charger and a couple of the batteries.

Ikegami HL-V59, Beverly Hill, 1/17/06

My Ikegami HLV59 was stolen today at the Beverly Hilton Hotel as we loaded out from shooting the Golden Globe Awards.
The camera serial number is ZT52352 and the Canon 20x8 lens (B3 mount) is 51258.
It seems to have been a professional thief staking out an award show where many cameras were present.
If you come across either of these items please notify the Beverly Hills Police or me at john@sharaf.net.
Thanks!

Beware of credit card fraud ring

Beware of credit card fraud ring working out of Richton Park and Chicago Illinois. Using stolen credit card information these guys have been hitting professional A/V dealers since mid December. They have all of the necessary credit card information to make you believe you are dealing with the true credit card holder. They want everything shipped priority overnight to their office, not their bill to address. Do not ship to an address that cannot be verified by the credit card company. If you ask, most credit card companies will call their clients and verify that they authorized the purchase. On 12-29-05 we were the victim of this theft ring.

Forwarded from Ed Clare of Pera:

Boston Camera reports the theft of some gear on Monday, June 13th, when someone came into take out some gear, paid, and never returned. He rented two miniDV cameras from us. Usually, for these types of small rentals we take a $1000 deposit on each camera and let the person walk out the door. Unfortunately, this time the cameras did not come back. The thief has also recently stole similar gear from Talamas Broadcast, another Boston-area rental house.

He is using the name Erik Meyers. The address he is using is a post box at a Mailboxes Etc. in Providence, RI. His phone numbers have since been disconnected and he has vanished.

The guy is selling these things on eBay under the name cinemablocks. They even have a bogus website:cinemablocks.com. The equipment stolen: Sony HVR-Z1U - SERIAL NUMBER 1110358 plus three batteries, charger, remote control, firewire cables Canon XL2 - SERIAL NUMBER 332900400996 plus three batteries, charger, remote control, firewire cables (2) Sachtler DV2 II tripod heads and legs

Sony DSR-400, Santa Ana, CA, 8/13/05

On August 13, 2005, I was contracted to work at an event at the Doubletree Hotel at 201 E. MacArthur Blvd. Santa Ana, CA 92707 as a videographer.
At approximately 6:40 p.m., I asked the band members, who I had been working with the entire day, to watch my camera for two minutes to use the restroom. Michael agreed to watch my camera. I then left the room for two minutes and when I returned the camera was missing. The Christian Band that was playing had all jumped out of their seats and we scoured the hotel parking lot within seconds of finding out it was missing, talking to the valet, going down to the parking structure to find nothing.

I then notified Santa Ana Police Department and spoke with Officer Caveness #2963 who then wrote a report and gave me the case number of #05-34947.

On August 15, 2005, I contacted the Director of Food and Beverage at the Doubletree Hotel. He told me I could review their video surveillance system which I did and found on August 13, 2005 at 6:44 p.m. a man appeared exiting the service entrance of the hotel with my camera and tri-pod. The man was dressed like a maintenance worker with tool belt and name badge. He was either white or Hispanic male 160-185 lbs, between 5’5” and 6’ tall, between 30-40 years old, dark thinning hair with dark pants, black tennis shoes, He exited the hotel out of an emergency entrance which goes outside of the hotel where there were no more surveillance cameras.

Upon reviewing the surveillance tapes, the Manager at the Doubletree asked if I would like a copy of the videotape. I said yes and the General Manager, agreed to provide the tape to me.I then called Santa Ana Police Department to do a follow up on the description and to have the emergency door fingerprinted and supplied the case number which was on file.

Having been a videographer for seventeen years, it disgusts me to see that kind of behavior happen in a respectable establishment. I think that the hotel staff should be better trained in identifying their staff, especially using service entrances where it is “employees only.” I do hundreds of events a year and the only place where I have encountered problems is at hotels. Hotels should be much more responsible for the safety of the guests and their property while they are in the facility.

Respectfully submitted,
Todd Summers 949 756 0606 Email Junk@tcsvideo.com

He indicated that he had been 'burned' by internet transactions before and would not pay in advance, I suggested an escrow account and he said it wasn't necessary, that from talking to me felt that we could do business. If I hadn't been in a hurry to sell my equipment (had two back mortgage payments to contend with), I would have insisted on payment in advance or waited until I had a local buyer with cash, but stupidly agreed to use COD via UPS (his suggestion that UPS has COD Guaranteed Funds). Of course, the reality is tha UPS doesn't guarantee anything and their insurance, which I paid for, doesn't cover anything. Note these links which describe their policy, which plays nicely into the scammers plans, because it gives you a false sense of security:

High Def lens and Viewfinder, 5/10/04

A Canon HJ15x8.5BIRS and a HDVF-20 were stolen sometime between 5pm Monday and 5 pm Tuesday 5/10 & 5/11 while en route from Chicago to Portland. The shipping cases were delivered to their intended recipient with a the subject key items missing from the shipment contents.

The gear was shipped using a freight forwarding company that in turn utilized SWA Cargo at Midway Airport in Chicago to move the equipmnet by air. There was a weather delay in Chicago that night and the equipment ended up sitting for over 12 hours on the cargo floor, relatively unattended. When the equipment arrived in Portland, it was discovered that the lens case had been emptied and the camera case had been opened, camera removed, viewfinder removed from camera and the camera then returned to case and closed. The equipment could have been stolen at any point en route however, the cargo dock is the only suspicious gap in unattended security.

Equipment missing: Canon HJ15x8 Lens Serial number 10142 Sony HDVF-20A Serial number to follow.

I'll ask that people please call either Kevin O'Connor or Kari Hess at Fletcher Chicago 312-932-2700 800-635-3824 with any information.

Here is an interesting story - a company called Tommie Productions, Jerry Grammar and Thomas Plunkett, address in Reno, NV. rented a Canon J9x5.2 lens, sent a money order, copy of social security card and Texas drivers license along with an insurance certificate from Truman Van Dyke. "Jerry Grammer" did have a Texas accent. They had someone pick up the lens (and a Sony 570 with Canon 9x5.2 from Rental Express here in San Francisco). They stalled on the return, kept us in stories via phone and email and then disappeared.
This happened on June 2 but I just discovered this web site. By the way, their insurance claimed that they were defrauded by their client and therefore the insurance was invalid! I've had to file a claim with my own insurance.

Help!
I had a shoot yesterday morning at the Tom Thumb on Lovers and Greenville in Dallas. After the shoot I had lunch with the producer and the clients at Two Rows Restaurant. I loaded the gear in my car, drove to Two Rows, put down the windows a crack and locked and armed my car. After lunch I drove to my office and parked in front where I could see the car. Drove home, parked it in my garage, drove back to my office this morning and about 30 minutes ago went to unload the car and the cameras were gone.

I spoke with someone at Two Rows and they said they worked yesterday and they never heard any car alarm go off. (I was parked right in front).

The person who took the equipment knew exactly what they were looking for. They went after all the expensive stuff and left the (relatively) inexpensive/heavy gear.

Detail:
A BETACAM SP Pal Video Recorder, model - - Sony PVW-2800P was stolen via Bank Fraud on June 17, 2002.
A man calling himself Michael Morelli from a company he called Bridge International, Inc. of Brooklyn, NY ordered via phone, fax and email a Sony PVW-2800P S/N 12898 from my Company. The deck was shipped via FedEx on my account and billed to the invoice. The deck was shipped standard overnight FedEx C.O.D. Secured Payment. To Brooklyn, NY.

It was Shipped to:
Bridge International, Inc. 7822 20th Ave. Brooklyn, NY 11214 Att: Michael Morelli 347-513-9965 fax 970-289-7414
The Packaged was received and signed for by: L. Vatmakhter on 06/18/02.
FedEx C.O.D. returned the Official Bank Check to my company the following day.
The Bank check was as follows.
Heading: MULTIBANKA OFFICIAL CHECK
Issued by the request of Michael Morelli, Brooklyn, NY
Issued by: Bankers Trust Company (New York) 280 Park Avenue, New York, NY 10017 1-212-250-2500

The check was returned to me with the reason indicated: Account Closed. The account was closed in 1999.
Michael Morelli followed immediately after the purchase to request more equipment and quotes. This is before we realized that the check was fraudulent.
Michael Morelli is also known as Stephen Morelli. He was using a cell phone # 347-513-9965 which is now not accepting calls. He was also using email address : bridge_NY@yahoo.com
I subsequently find that Bridge International is a Parcel Service (such as Mail Boxes Etc.) and I am told by this Parcel company that Mr. Morelli has only been doing business through them for approximately 5 weeks.
I spoke and emailed Morelli telling him of the situation. He responded with an apology and that he will be wiring funds to my account that same day to be received the following day. It never happened.
From my research, MULTIBANKA is a bank doing business in Latvia.

If you have any information that may pertain to this incident please notify me.

2 Betacam Packages, Marriot NJ, 4/16/02

To Whom it may Concern;
We lost Two Betacam pkg's on one hit last Tuesday morning, April 16th,2002. My Soundman and I along with about a dozen other clients and crew members just started to load out of the Courtyard by Marriott in Lyndhurst, NJ when four oddly behaving South Americans began to circle around my Suburban. Three older (45-60 years of age) males & one Female mixed around and through our large group. It was 9:30am and it was quiet as we loaded our gear. The three Betacams (in portabrace carry cases) had been placed in a row behind the drivers seat and covered over with three tripods and finally covered again with black cloth. The doors had then been shut and we started to load the back area through the rear cargo doors with about 10 mixed size Pelican cases. One of the older men, dressed in a sports coat approached me and passionately began asking in broken English and Spanish "about the airport shuttle." I tried to understand him for about 15 to 25 seconds and then noticed he just ran off to his white Dodge mini van and sped away with the other three. I shrugged by shoulders and went right back into the Suburban and immediately noticed the hole left by my two missing cameras. I yelled "we've been robbed by those guys!" The A.P dialed 911 and just 3 minutes later Lyndhurst police came upon the scene. They put out an APB, but it was too late. We had been had for about $50,000 of gear and crushed emotionally that this could happen right under our seasoned production unit of nearly a dozen people. WOW these freaks are good, real good! Apparently the other two guys each opened a rear passenger door and dug out one camera each. "Hindsight 20/20 Tip-off:" Everytime I was catching glances at any one of them they had been looking at me...not normal behavior. Try it sometime when you load in or out. People don't usually give you a second glance. These guys had been checking to see if I was looking at them as they looked for their moment. Also, how did they know to be here when we were checking out. Don't overlook the chance that an accomplice works in that hotel and cell phoned them the info. MO: To distract owner and then have accomplices take camera and run off to a getaway car.

If offered any of this gear, please contact Detective Shellhamer at 201-939-2900 ext 272, REWARD!!!! He believes these could be Equadorian iIlegals working out of Queens New York. "Be advised all gear humpers...This was almost a magic act!"

CHECK THIS OUT !!! 1/22/02

I just had the wierdest phone call.

A guy named Mark Sanchez called and said he was selling video TV production equipment. I asked him what he had and he said he had a whole truck. I was puzzled because we are a small market (less than 150K population) in the Central Valley of California. I know everyone in the area. Never heard of this guy, or his truck.

Says he has a full rig with generators and Microwave. 10 input switcher, (no brand name), D30 cameras (3) BetacamSP, DVCAM and DVCPRO decks.

He did not seem really knowledgeable about the equipment. Which was another red flag. Says he want $500,000.00 for the whole deal.

I asked him to send me an email with all the details. Anyone missing anything like this?

Sony BVW-400A  Bethesda,MD  12/01

In December 2001 a Sony BVW-400A serial number 10062, was stolen from the National Institutes of Health, MAPB, which is the central video production and broadcast facility for the campus of institutes in Bethesda, MD.

The camera recently was overhauled with new upper and lower scanner assembly, pinch roller, brushes and slip rings, and complete front end camera alignment. There are no dead pixels, and the camera is/was in absolute mint condition. It has a Fujinon 15x9 internal focus zoom lens with 2x. The Sony NP1 battery back was replaced with an Anton Bauer brick adapter plate.

There is a $500.00 for any information leading to the recovery. Please contact Ken Ryland, the department head at 301 435-8270 or email him at rylandk@mail.nih.gov. Contact Rick Singer at Rick@singer.net for any questions of a technical nature.

We don't usually list non-broadcast equipment, but in this case we'll make an exception.

Dear Sir or Ms.
I was recently raped and burgerlised by three unidentified men (in my own home) in my struggle to recover my dignity and lively hood I¹m planning to see if it is possible to track the stolen items in order to find the perpetrators of this crime. The most helpful thing you could do is keep an eye out for the stolen items. The items include:
* Sony DCR-VX100 digital cam corder. Serial number: S0100870416 this camera may have my name on it in several locations. It was in a black camera bag without the power cord. * Sony Cybershot DSC-P30 digital still camera. This item would show up (mostly likely) without the USB came that connects it to a computer. Also it would have a 32 MB memory stick instead of the 8MB memory stick that normally comes with the camera.
Rio MP3 player (model unknown, silver older model) this item would also arrive (most likely) without the USB cable needed to connect it to the computer. The songs on it may include several songs by ³the waterboys² such as ³glastonbury song² (I only mention this since there is no way to erase the songs without hooking it up to a computer, and the people who did of this crime neglected to take the USB cord.)
White AWIA combination CD player tape player radio. This item is rather old. I can¹t think of any identifying traits except that it was full of batteries when it was taken.
If you see anyone coming in with these items do you best to get their name/ phone number licence plate number or anything that may help to identify them. Of course getting my stuff back would be nice, but I don¹t care very much about that. Mostly, I want these violent and cruel people found so that they will not hurt another young woman (as they are bound to do)If you already have these items, don¹t touch them. It may be possible to obtain finger prints from them. Just call the police right away.
Please turn any information you find over to the police. Their number is: 212-694-3010, ask for Joseph P. McCallion, Detective, you can say it is in regards to the case involving Susan Murray from 136th st.
Any help that you provide will help to make the world a safer and a better place. I thank you for reading this letter.

Susan Murray

On October 29 2001, one of my crews was involved in an incident at the Oak Brook Hyatt Hotel near Chicago. A professional robbery crew grabbed a cart containing an entire production kit, in the lobby of a busy hotel and raced my crew down a hallway and into a waiting van. My cameraman and a bystander wrestled with the getaway crew and managed to get some of the equipment back but it almost cost them their life. I can replace the equipment; it's not worth their lives. I wish they had gotten the license number instead. This is a list of the missing equipment.

I pulled into the covered lot and parked for the night. During the night someone slim jimmed my driver door and removed a BVW50, Mackie 1402VLS, a couple of cheap VHS and get this, the no name power supply for the BVW50 that was in a separate case, and heavy.

11-27-00 Election 2000 Woes

Dear Netpolice,

First of all, thank you for running such a wonderful site. I thought I'd never need to write you, but time has caught up to me.

-- EQUIPMENT THEFT IN MIAMI 11/27/2000 -- -- WARNING ABOUT SHOOTING IN MIAMI BEACH AREA --

Earlier today, on November 27, 2000, I was filming some coverage for the Election 2000 story in Miami Beach. We stopped for lunch and parked in a busy, crowded public parking lot next to the Aldon Street outdoor mall (adjacent to Lincoln Road). We ate lunch, later returned to our rented Dodge Intrepid, and then drove off to our next location. Once we got to our next location, we opened the trunk to get out our gear and were flabbergasted to find out that almost all of our gear had been stolen from the trunk... without a scratch of damage to the car! In broad daylight! In a busy parking lot!

We immediately returned to the parking lot where we had parked during lunch and called the police. They showed up right away with a "Crime Scene Unit" van and finger-printed the ENTIRE car. Very impressive. Turns out that there had been a rash of burglaries on that very parking lot. While they were dusting our car for prints, a woman came up and told us that just last week she had taken her car into service and then had her rental car broken into in exactly the same way we did -- on the same lot! And, they only took things from her trunk only (just like us) and without a scratch (just like us). And then she told us that her business associate a couple days later also had a car that she was renting broken into -- again on the same lot, in exactly the same way!

But, to top it all off, later that evening we were in the Miami Beach station finishing up our police report and a couple comes running in shouting "We've been robbed! They got into our trunk and stole everything!" So, I turned to them and said, "Were you possibly driving a rental car that you had parked in the lot next to the Aldon Street outdoor mall?" Guess what! They had! The thieves had hit their RENTED car in the same lot, in the same hour, in the same broad daylight as our car! And again, without a scratch!

So, first of all, I would like to issue a warning to everyone that by parking your car in Miami Beach (especially in the vicinity of Aldon Street) you are risking having your trunk cleaned out -- especially if your are driving a rented car. The Miami Beach Police has even assigned a special Task Force to this problem. If you find that your car has been burglarized, don't touch anything as they may want to dust your entire vehicle for finger-prints.

Anyway, we lost about $13,000 in mostly new gear that day. A lot of the gear did not have serial numbers on it. I am only sending you the list of the equipment for which we have serial numbers. I would appreciate you posting this warning and the serial numbers on your site.

Major Heist in Brazil 7/26/00

An actual "Broadcast Video Mob" seems to be acting in Brazil. Ten days ago a guy introducing himself as a messenger, got the security guard to open the gate and following him 10 other men, carrying machine guns and AR-15, broke into one of the largest production houses in Sao Paulo. In less than 15 minutes they got everything, from NLE’s to cameras. (they even brought a truck along to carry the gear!)

Some items are hard-to-sell, because they are not very popular, like the Softimage DS, there's only a few of them in Brazil (about 35). So we're pretty sure they'll try to sell it abroad, in a huge market like the US. Any kind of info would be fully appreciated and there's a cash reward of US$ 10,000.00 for informations leading to the whole gear recovery.

Sony VX-1000 / New York   9/3/99

On Amtrak train #64 into NY Sept.3. at 9:40 pm Sony VX-1000 Serial # 010010939 with Beech audio adapter and Tram microphone, filters, etc. Distinctive minor damage to body of camera- frontmost connection between side strap and body is broken, strap is dangling.

Left the camera in a small royal blue bag on train in rush of disembarking- we were the last passengers off before the train went to the yard, but the camera has not made it to "lost & found...." The bag looks more like a travellers pack than a camera bag.

Stolen D600/Jacksonville, Fl    7/16/99

Thanks for listing this stolen gear! On July 16 I was on my way to a shoot but first I had to meet my audio operator, Richard Skinner), at my office. I arrived at 8:30am, my audio operator arrived at 8:45am and at 9:30am my audio operator went out to my van to load a light kit and came back to my office with the news that my van was broken into and my camera was gone. The thieves grabbed only those portabrace cases with gear and left portabrace bags with grip clamps and such. They were not satisfied with just the camera and all and audio bag, they looked for my tripod where I usually kept and then proceeded to wipe off the windows on their way to the front of the van and then broke the front passenger window to get to the tripod. Whoever stole this gear new what they were looking for and where it was. Be careful of who you hire! Thanks again, Stephen McMillan

#12. Apollo One votive candles (3) in wooden case.

I had just finished shooting a memorial ceremony held at Cape Canaveral Air Station for the Apollo One astronauts killed in the 1967 launch pad fire. I mention this because item 12 above was a custom set of three candles hand painted with the Apollo One patch and each crew members name. It was in a hand-made wooden carrying case with an inlaid cross on the lid an is distinctive.

A MONICA MANIA SIDE EFFECT: STOLEN TV NEWS CAMERAS     8-18-98
By Lorraine Woellert in Washington for Business Week, as posted in the 8/18/98 DON FITZPATRICK ASSOCIATES  "SHOPTALK"

Plenty of folks think the news coverage of the Monica Lewinsky matter borders on the criminal. But now, it appears that the newsies themselves have become victims of some real crime.

A new breed of thieves has been walking away from crowded news stakeouts with $75,000 video cameras. And the problem has become so bad that the FBI has been called in to investigate -- and has set up a nationwide database to track the thefts. In the past year, more than 60 of the high-priced cameras have been lifted from TV news crews around the country.

The MO is simple: A man wearing a khaki photographer's vest or the unofficial uniform of TV cameramen -- polo shirt and cotton pants -- will stroll up to a line of network cameras, pluck the most expensive one from its tripod, hoist it on his shoulder, and walk off.

With networks importing bigger crews into Washington to work the Lewinsky scandal, and with more foreign news organizations joining the mix, the D.C. media scrum is no longer a group of familiar faces. That makes it easy for a stranger to pass unnoticed. "These guys can put a
lanyard around their neck with something laminated that looks like a credential, and they fit right in," says Tom Mattesky, deputy Washington bureau chief for CBS News.

Every major network has reported losing at least one camera in recent months. CBS was hit in July while a crew was covering the shootings on Capitol Hill. NBC lost a camera during a stakeout in front of Lewinsky's Watergate apartment. In both cases, a cameraman turned his back for just a minute -- and the video gear was gone.

The thieves appear to be part of one or more organized rings, says Susan Lloyd, spokeswoman for the FBI's Washington field office. Network producers note that the crooks know how to quickly release a camera from its tripod and invariably grab the newest or most expensive equipment. "They know what they're looking for,"  Mattesky says. "They're filling orders. These aren't guys taking something and trying to peddle it on the streets."

FBI officials began investigating the camera heists three years ago. But the Washington media frenzy of the past several months has sent the theft rate soaring. While Washington is the epicenter of these crimes, cameras have also been stolen in Los Angeles, Miami, Atlanta,
and New York City.

What happens to a hot $75,000 TV camera? So far, none have turned up in the U.S. The prevailing theory among news producers is that the equipment is being shipped off to Asia, where it's used to make high-quality porn videos. "That," the FBI's Lloyd says, "is just a theory."

The FBI is on to us.

My name is Special Agent Marc Dinardo of the FBI.  I am the case agent handling television camera thefts.

Feel free to post my name and telephone number, 202-278-2000, on your site.  However, I want to make it clear that I am NOT investigating individual thefts - I am investigating the theft rings that target these cameras.  So I
am interested in hearing the background of some of these thefts, but it is doubtful an individual theft itself will be
investigated by this office.  The last thing I need is a hundred people wanting me to investigate their individual
thefts.  I wish I could, but that will have to be left to local law enforcement.  Unfortunately, if a camera has already
been stolen by one of these theft groups it is extremely unlikely that it will be returned.

I would request your assistance on one issue.  I am looking for information on a camera theft that occurred in
Alexandria, Virginia, at the Old Colony Inn in Late Summer 1998.  If anyone knows any details about this theft,
please call me.

Score One for the Good Guys!

My name is Brent Cohen. I was at the Dadeland Mall in Miami, Fl when I was shooting a story for a nationally aired show. I had the camera next to me when I was setting up lights. When I looked down the camera was gone. Out of the corner of my eye I saw a guy with my camera. the manager and I started a chase. He then jumped in a car to escape. I noticed a Metro-Dade police officer writing a ticket who then jumped out of his and stopped the car at gunpoint. It was great! Anyway, I got the camera back without any damage and they are still in jail. If anyone has had there camera stolen in the past 4 months let me know so I can inform them if the asst. attorney on the case.

REAL LIFE DIALOGUE:

LETTER: My Ikegami HL-V55 was stolen this evening in a classic "snatch and run" at Houston's Hobby airport as my soundman and I were loading our cases into the Suburban crew truck. A well-dressed man asked me to change a $20 bill for the "Smart Carte" machines, another man was meanwhile distracting my soundman for directions to the Aeromexico counter while (I assume) a third snatched the camera out of the back seat of our truck. This camera was in a brand new KATA camera bag.

ANSWER:  Sorry, bud....I sat here trying to think what I could say to you........... "Aw F***!" was the best I could come up with.

ANSWER II: Sorry... your "Aw f***" was a phrase that has already been used. Several times. But it's still very appropriate. Oh well. It's a story for the grandkids, now. Hope you are well...and life in general is treating you better than my lot lately. Actually, other than the camera, life is good.

hhhmmm....

In Vancouver British coloumbia on knight street and kingsway in the flea market, you will find about 900 or so stolen cameras for sale, but the authorities do nothing! every weekend they sell goods and you can obviously tell they are hot, but no one gets busted! I had an amplifier ripped from my car, worth about 300$ or so, a month later I saw it at the flea market for 60 bux! and I could tell it was mine cause of the id number, I talked with the lady selling the stuff and she said that I'd have to speak with her husband but he wouldnt be back till next week, so I went there the next week and he said that there is no way I could prove it was mine and he took it and left in his van, bunch of bullshit.  Hope you guys can do domething

December 3, 1997  ATTENTION - If you can help in any way with the matter outlined below, please contact LMG directly.
Mike Rolly e-mail: mike.rolly@lmg.net

The phone number given, (407) 491-0558 turned out to be a disconnected cell phone, another number on file, (407) 658-9872 turned out to be someone Mr. Rowe works with while in Florida.  This gentleman, who would not disclose his name said Mr. Rowe lives in Atlanta, GA and gave us a possible phone number of (770) 614-6186, which just continually rings. This customer rented a small mixer on his first rental, a DAT recorder on his second rental and an S-VHS edit deck on his third rental. On these three occasions he paid with a MasterCard, which was cleared by the approval
center and we were paid for. It was found that after doing some investigating on December 3, 1997 that MasterCard was cancelled because of unauthorized charges.  The rental in question was picked up and signed for by Ken Rowe on the evening of November 24, 1997.   This gear was due to in the AM of November 26, 1997 and was never returned.

The gear on that particular rental is as follows:
(1) Sony Betacam SP BVW-75 Recorder with Dynamic Tracking
      Serial Number 17142    Value $33,000.00
(1) Sony SVO-9600 S-VHS Edit Deck
      Serial Number 11632   Value $2,400.00

A description of Ken Jackson-Rowe is as follows:
Black Male, approximately 22 years of age, 6 in height, 150-160 pounds,  last seen wearing a red sweat shirt and pants with the name New Breed across the front of the shirt.  On this particular rental Mr. Rowe used a Visa to pay for the order which did get an approval code, but was found out on December 3, 1997 that he is not an authorized card user and the bank is attempting to contact the card holder.

At this point LMG is making every attempt to file formal charges against Ken Rowe for theft of rental gear. Please feel free to contact me as soon as possible with any questions you may have or any additional information you need to create the fax.

Once again, thanks for all of your help!  Mike Rolly e-mail: mike.rolly@lmg.net
